When the Founder, Charles Albert learned there were few to no educational opportunities in the Senahú Area for Jr. High and High School, he decided to do something about that. Fundacion San Mateo was born in 2011 when it served 22 students and has grown to serving nearly 250 students with certificates in Computation, Agriculture, Mechanics, and Health/Medicine. Additionally, Fundacion San Mateo excels in national testing at both levels.

There has been grassroots pressure on the school administration to start an Elementary School in the Senahú Area. However to avoid competition with several local public elementary schools, it was decided a better approach would be to support them.
That vehicle to support elementary schools is a program called WIKAN (meaning helpful uncle in Quechi). It was developed to provide an after school program for elementary school students needing motivation, tutoring, and sometimes basic schools supplies to help them do better in their respective schools. A coordinated effort between local public school elementary school administrators, parents, and Fundacion San Mateo staff provide this program which is achieving extraordinary success.
